Cleofe’s StoryCleofe is a married mother of eight children who lives in the sunny, scenic municipality of Cordova in the Philippines. This 47-year-old entrepreneur still has four children in school. Therefore, has to work even harder than most to ensure that all their needs are catered for. For the last six years, she has been providing for them through her general store, where she sells a wide range of goods to friends, neighbors and tourists alike. In order to continue running a successful business, Cleofe approached the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation for a loan. The money she received would go towards purchasing more groceries for her store. Thus allowing her to sell more to her customers. She hopes that the profits that she gains from the business will help her achieve her dream of putting her children through college.
Kiva PartnerHer loan was locally issued by the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation (NWTF), a non-governmental organization and Kiva partner. The company takes pride in its holistic approach to the alleviation of poverty. They couple their financial services with a host of development services for their clients, such as the entrepreneur, Cleofe. Some of the services that they provide their clients include hospital income benefits and accidental death benefits. Also included are medical and dental missions, training courses, and many more. Through the NWTF and Kiva’s lending platform, it was possible for the Mercy Foundation to provide full funding for Cleofe’s $225 loan. This loan got her one step closer to achieving her dream of sending her kids to college. Organizations like these are making a huge impact in low income communities. they provide individuals and families with a means to escape the poverty that surrounds them. The reason why these organizations are so successful is very simple; they would all like to see low income families and entrepreneurs gain access to financial services that they would not usually be able to access. So, Kiva unites donors such like the foundation under one umbrella, while the NWTF searches for people on the ground who are in need of the funding. In conclusion, anyone can join the Kiva platform.
