Mercy Foundation Provides Loan
Here is Charleen’s StoryAbundant plants and rolling green hills are a sight to behold in Canlaon, Negros Oriental, Philippines. At just 29 years old, Charleen is a woman who has been working for eight years to build her income. And, she is married with two children. One of her children is in school, and she is determined to ensure that they both get a good education. She has been farming for years, growing a variety of vegetables that she sells. For extra income, she also keeps livestock. Charleen has decided to become a member of Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation. So, she approached them for a 9,000 Philippine Pesos (PHP) loan to buy fertilizer and other farm supplies. This will be her first loan, but with her long term goal to elevate her life, she is a worthy candidate. She is looking to save up enough money from her earnings to purchase some more farmland in the future.
The Kiva PartnerShe successfully applied for this loan, which was supplied by the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation (NWTF), a Kiva partner and non-governmental organization. The organization is working towards supplying socio-economic services to the people of Negros Occidental province’s low income communities. Furthermore, some of the services that they provide include life insurance, accidental death benefits, and hospital income benefits. Charleen's vision for building a great future impressed Mercy Foundation. Thus, this revealed that she is worth the investment, and she does not pose a flight risk for paying back the loan. Therefore, Mercy Foundation decided to fully fund her $225 loan, using the Kiva Platform and NWTF. Organizations like these, along with lenders such as the Mercy Foundation are helping to change the lives of people who have been living in poverty. One of the reasons we are able to work so effectively is because everyone involved in the process has the same aim. This is to ensure that underprivileged entrepreneurs have access to finance to change their lives. Therefore, the Kiva platform brings organizations like Mercy Foundation and NWTF together, to identify needy entrepreneurs and disburse the funds that have been donated.
